A Complete Course Outline by Dr Marcus Clarkson

Course Overview

You see, I've spent thirty years being involved with businesses all over Australia, and I've come to a fascinating conclusion: The most effective managers, you see, are not always the brightest in the room. They are the ones who get people. They are the ones who can traverse the complex tapestry of human emotions that is found in every workplace, from the hectic offices of Sydney to the iron ore mines of Western Australia.

For managers looking to break free of traditional command and control leadership, this extensive training program can teach you how. It is for people who know that in the modern workspace, emotional intelligence is not just an optional skill, it is a prerequisite to success, and it is sustainable.

And during my consulting work, I have seen striking changes occur after a manager has gained the awareness that increases emotional intelligence. I've seen teams shift from dysfunctional to high performing, individual contributors flourish under emotionally intelligent leadership, and organisations cultivate environments where people truly want to deliver their best work.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the training the learners will be able to:

Acknowledge and take control of their emotional reactions in difficult workplace experiences

Use signals and triggers to recognise the emotional temperature of team members before it reaches a boiling point

Understand how to communicate in a way that respects emotions

Guide difficult conversations with ease and empathy

Create psychological safety on their teams to increase performance and engagement

Learn to build personal and team resilience coping mechanisms in challenging or stressful times

Developing emotionally intelligent feedback loops that inspire, not demoralise

What You Will Learn

MODULE 1: THE ROLE OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN LEADERSHIP

We will first take a look at the true definition of emotional intelligence when it comes to management. You'll explore the four basic components of EQ and take self reflection quizzes with tips to help you understand what your current emotional intelligence baseline is.

Module 2: Self Awareness and Self Management

Get to know your emotional patterns, hot buttons, and predictable reactions. We'll discuss some tangible ways to remain calm under pressure and how to manage your own stress levels when it feels like everything is falling apart all at once.

Module 3: Reading the Room Social Awareness Techniques

Fine tune your sense and feel for the emotionality of your team and individual team members. You will learn to recognise when somebody is struggling, even if they do not say so explicitly.

The Relationship Management and Influence module is fourth module module.

Learn the subtle nuance of adjusting your style, based on different personality and emotional preferences. We will discuss how to motivate people for what they are actually motivated by, as opposed to what you think should motivate them.

Module 5: Having Difficult Conversations

Role play processes for providing tough feedback, addressing performance issues, and managing conflicts in such a way that keeps relationships while achieving necessary results.

MODULE 6 Cultivating Emotional Resilience in Teams

Understand how you can coach your team to recovery after a setback, to successfully deal with change and to stay high performing even in high pressure situation.

Module 7: Managing UP with EI

Learn how to work with your manager well, especially when they are under pressure or dealing with their own emotional issues.

Module 8: Developing Emotionally Intelligent Systems

Design processes, meetings and team practices that organically support emotional well being and high performance.

Training Methodology

This isn't lecture based training. We'll draw on real workplace examples and include role plays and case studies from real Australian organisations. You will practice new skills in a safe environment before using them in your workplace.

Every reflection session will have time for self and peer reflection and practical tools for you to use straight away. And we will give you practical supports and follow up opportunities to help you use what you learnt.

Concluding Remarks

Stress management for managers has nothing to do with being a work counsellor, it has everything to do with becoming a better leader. By learning how emotions function in your professional life, you can manage them, and even put them to work, for instance, you can ensure that anxiety doesn't get in the way of a good performance, or that boredom gets your creativity flowing, or that disappointment energises you to get back on the horse.

This training is going to teach you actionable skills that you can use (and should use) in every stage of your leadership path. Most importantly, it's what will make you the kind of manager people respect, trust, and actually want to follow.

Make an investment in yourself in terms of the development of your own emotional intelligence, and that will pay off, not only in the performance of your team, but in your job satisfaction, and in your career. After all, leadership is, at the end of the day, a people business, and understanding others are emotional.
